GAMEPLAY NOTES #1

If I had been thinking ahead, I would have taken pictures of my first-level character sheets. The party has long since leveled up and upgraded equipment, though. At any rate, here are the first-level basics:

  • CUATALA DUNAI. Chaotic Good Halfling (Ghostwise) Barbarian. STR 11, DEX 16, CON 10, INT 13, WIS 14, CHA 10. Deity: Sheela Peryroyl. Feat: Luck of Heroes (Channath Vale Regional Feat). Role: Skirmishing and skills. Barbarian Substitution Level: Berserker Strength.

Cuatala isn’t meant to be a barbarian, but she is meant to start with tons of HP. Barbarian is the Ghostwise favored class, and this seemed like the only time for her to partake. She’ll take her next few levels in Scout.

  • GRADDICK TOSKOV. Lawful Good Human Knight. STR 17, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 10, WIS 9, CHA 14. Deity: Lathander. Feats: Luck of Heroes (Bastard of Azoun), Heavy Shield Specialization. Role: Front-line fighter.

Graddick has very good stats for a knight, who can compensate for low Wisdom with fast Will save progression. Charisma is good for knight abilities and for the few levels of Marshal he plans to add.

  • VAHAERA ARTHEMON. ?Chaotic Neutral Half-Drow Beguiler. STR 11, DEX 13, CON 10, INT 18, WIS 10, CHA 14. Deity: ?Eilistraee. Feat: Fleet of Foot (Secret Moondancer). Role: Searching, beguiling.

Vahaera’s thief and social skills are very good. Cuatala has trapfinding too, so she can Aid Another to boost Vahaera’s searches. This is my first time playing a beguiler; they are fun in the right situation, but they can be frustrating against constructs, undead, and so on.

  • YSTRIEN AURENT. Neutral Good Human Bard. STR 14, DEX 12, CON 10, INT 8, WIS 15, CHA 16. Deity: Lathander. Feats: Mercantile Background (Sembia Regional Feat), Plague Resistant. Role: Supporting, healing, commercial transactions. Bard Substitution Level: Bardic Knack.

Ystrien is destined to be a cleric, but he begins as a bard, partially for the skills—clerics have bad skill progression, and his low Intelligence isn’t helping matters. He also needs ranks in Perform to take the Morninglord of Lathander prestige class.

Now, these scores are really nice, and I swear I rolled them. This was my method: I rolled 4d6, dropping the lowest die, as is usual in 3.5 character creation. But because I was creating four characters, not just one, I put all 24 resulting scores in a pool and distributed them as I saw fit, trying to make sure every character got a good share of high and low. As is often the case with RPGs, the character concepts developed as the numbers found homes.
